Things to Do Today
Sarah Salway
The office manager pins the list,
hot yellow like an African sun,
on the kitchen wall. She starts us off.
Please leave mugs as you find them.
And one by one, we sidle in to write up
tasks. Let nightingales nest in reception.
Light candles, hundreds of thousands,
in every room every day. Laugh more.
We will close our eyes to tell secrets,
breathe moonlight into air conditioning,
hide silver bells in files. We’ll kiss each other
awake with butterflies, grow grass to lie on.
The list fills until the very last line.
